Criterion 1: Source Material — Ancient Tree vs. Plantation
The single most important quality determinant in raw pu-erh is the age and type of tree the leaf came from. This is not a matter of tradition or prestige — it is biochemistry.
Ancient tea trees (gu shu, 古树) are trees with deep, established root systems that have developed over decades or centuries into mineral-rich soil layers.
